I have heard a lot about Holes over the last couple of years. First as a best selling book, and then as a movie. I didn't know anything about this movie other then that it was really good, and people of all ages really liked it. I decided to rent it this weekend and boy was I not disappointed. It was a really good movie and best of all it is great for all ages. So if you are an adult and you want to get a movie that you and the younger ones can watch together, this is a perfect movie.
The storyline for this movie is a little more complex then most kids’ movies, but just about any kid will be able to follow it as long as they are paying attention. Here is the plot as basic as I can make it without giving away the movie. There is this juvenile detention camp in the middle of a desert and for a punishment they have to dig one 5-foot hole a day in the middle of a desert, everyday, until they leave. The warden makes these kids dig these holes because the warden is looking for something that was lost in the desert and they are hoping the kids digging the holes will find it.
The story does a great job of telling you the background details only when you need them, when you need them, so it doesn't let you forget something that you need to know in the future. For example, throughout the whole movie there are short flashbacks to years and years ago, and these little flashbacks help build up the reasons why everyone is doing what everyone is doing. You will be sitting there saying, why are they doing this, or why is it like this, and then a flashback will come in, and help fill in the story for you, so that you are back on track again. Everything comes together into a nice neat ending that I don't think anyone would dislike.
The story centers around this one kid Stanley who enters the camp because of what he and his family calls bad luck. Shia LaBeouf plays Stanley or Caveman, which is what they call him in the camp. Shia is best known for his role as Lewis Stevens on Disney's Even Stevens. Other then Shia there is Jon Voight, Sigourney Weaver and newcomer Khleo Thomas. All of the actors that are in Holes did a great job of keeping true to the characters in the book. I didn't read the book, but I was told this by a bunch of kids who have.
The movie is great, it has comedy and suspense and at times can be a little scary, if you are an 8 year old. I think this is one of those films were you won't know how good it is until you see it yourself, so go ahead and see if for yourself. |
