Night Watch is the first part of a trilogy which is already breaking all of the Russian boxoffice numbers. While the second part is showing in Russia at the time this is being written, the first part is just beginning to show at select theaters in the United States.
The movie starts with a great battle between the light and the dark armies fighting but they basically exchange kills they realize that they are too evenly matched and should wait until the prophesized great Other is born to tip the scale towards one side over the other.
Next we meet Anton Gorodetsky who eventually learns that he is an Other. Others are essentially what we refer to as vampires. They are humans with abnormal abilities which vary from one to the next. When an Other is born they must decide which side to align themselves with. The light Others will drink blood only to use the powers to protect the Truce from any dark Others that try to break it. The Dark aligned Others have more of the physical CRAVING for blood to survive.
To explain much further would be to give away important plot points so on with my personal thoughts on the film.
The film has a very frenetic pace to it which I greatly enjoyed but it does throw some people off. The movie has great action scenes starting with the graphic battle scenes that start the movie. Two large armies colliding and rendering eachother to small bits. The movie also includes great scenes like Anton fighting an invisible foe that can be seen only in a mirror with a shard of a broken mirror in his hand (the reason he is invisible is explained and reoccurs in the movie).
The movie also makes use of well-placed humor throughout and between raging action scenes which accounts for the humor score that I awarded the movie. For those of us that are watching it in the US (or even English speaking European countries) the opening narrative is in English and while the music throughout the movie seems to be Russian industrial, the song over the ending credits is a song by The Bravery which is also in English. Everything in the rest of the film which would require essentially re-filming to make it English is translated such as speech and any written text that might be important. They use some need effects on the subtitles such as being blown away by smoke or being moved by a character moving onscreen quite a bit which I enjoyed but may seem not as great to other viewers. To give an idea of some of the effects shots in Night Watch I will mention that Night Watch had been billed as "The Russian Matrix" although it isn't entirely accurate but it gives a decent depiction of what you will see.
All-in-all the fast pace, great action sequences, effects and humor made it a great movie going experience for me and I very eagerly anticipate parts 2 and 3 of the series! And because I understand that the very things that made me love this movie may make others dislike it, I throw in my words of caution but this is a well made movie that deserves a shot and due to its nature try to catch it in the theaters as I am not sure how much justice TV screens will do it. That is, if it plays in a theater near you. |
