New on DVD: "Meet The Fockers"... Get it? Their name sounds dirty... That's about as clever as this sequel to "Meet The Parents" gets, and that's too bad, because "Meet The Parents" was a pretty funny movie, but here they have totally de clawed Robert Deniro's character, so there really is no tension to play off of. Deniro seems almost hell bent to ruin his reputation as a great actor in this century. Between the comedies, the lame thrillers and the credit card ads; he's really in need of a Marty Scorsese pimp slapping. I think the exact moment he fell apart was 1997, when the lame "Jackie Brown" came out. He's supposed to be directing Matt Damon in "The Good Shepherd" next. His direction on "A Bronx Tale" was a little spotty, but he got better with his uncredited work on "The Score", so maybe it's time for Deniro to move behind the camera full time, while we can still respect him.
It hurts me to say that Barbara Striesend was actually pretty good as Ben Stiller's mother (Although Mercedes Rule would have been a better choice), but Dustin Hoffman has to stop making movies, or comedies at least. Between this and I Heart Huckbees, I have suffered enough of acting through his hair styles. The DVD is crammed full of bloopers and out-takes of Hoffman being nutty, but it just has to stop. If you think a dog getting flushed down the hopper and a little toddler saying naughty words are a stitch, "Meet The Folkers" is for you; other than that, go rent "Sideways". You have been warned. |
