I saw this movie not long after it had been released on VHS. At the time I was a teenager and living on my own searching for great friends and relationships. I had to have watched this movie over a hundred times in all.
Ready to hear about the movie yet? Four African American women, connected in that they were all friends, are each finding their place in life.
Robin was a successful business woman with a boyfriend who only came over for a bootycall when his wife and kids were busy. Robin loved Russell, but every time she told him to make a choice he'd say he'd be with Robin and go home to his wife and kids.
Gloria was married and had a son before her husband told her he was gay. They divorced and for 17 years she has raised her son alone. Now her son, Tarik, is graduating High School and has an opportunity to travel with a spiritual band and play music. Gloria has a relationship with a great guy who just moved in across the street from them but she squeezes her boyfriend and son too tightly and ends up almost losing them both.
Savannah is played by Whitney Houston. I think a lot of people watched this movie only because of her but I didn't find her character to be a very strong lead in the movie. Savannah is also successful in business and has just gotten a great raise. She's moved closer to her friends and things are going great. She's dating here and there until she gets a call from her mother fixing her up with an ex boyfriend of Savannah's from out of town. Kenneth (who is played by Dennis Haysbert...the President from TV's 24) is a married man who tries to convince Savannah that she needs him. Her mother tries to force the relationship...married or not, her mother thinks Kenneth will take care of her so she won't end up alone.
By far though I thought the character of Bernadine "Bernie" was the strongest character. I admired her strength and courage. She was married for 11 years. Built a company from the ground up with her husband and raised two children in the process. Her husband has an affair and decides to divorce her and leave her with nothing. Bernie snaps and does some things considered "rash", but her struggle to find herself and become a better woman, mother and person is, to me, the best part of the movie.
All in all, with the exception of one explosion and a little fire... there's no "action" or "violence". It has some sexual content and shows drugs (of the NON prescription kind) so I'd certainly not call it a Family movie. No special effects. Still Overall I gave it a 9. For women it's just a feel good movie. When the movie goes off, give it a day or so, I dare you not to hum at least one song from the movie. :) |
