We have seen in the past how films can be made into cinematic gold, such as Lord of The Ring. People have tried to re-create this many time but have failed. The Golden Compass is a great family film. The religious undertones have been removed so the children and religious nutters are not upset. The visuals and special effects are amazing. However, the film is all over the place. The girl seems to be traveling all over the place with hardly any explanation. The polar bear played by Ian Mckellen is the only character I felt anything for, and this is evidence of poor storytelling. I hope there are sequels so that this wonderful universe can be improved upon.
