Adaptations, as a rule, are usually not as good as the original material they were adapted from. That isn't the case with the "30 Days of Night" movie. The three issue comic series was just okay; it had a great premise, an iffy execution, and art that was extremely hard to follow. The movie, on the other hand, was a much more solid story.
There were a few changes made, and most were for the better. One of the strongest parts about this film, though, is the way that the vampires look. They didn't make them look too monstrous, which usually leads to cheesiness, but they did just enough to make them look truly scary. As far as vampires movies go, this is one of the scariest I've seen. Director David Slade does a great job in recreating the secluded and snowy land of Barrow, Alaska, and does even a better job at thrashing the town to make it look like the vampires arrival sent it straight to hell. The actors do a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life; in the comic, everyone was pretty one-dimensional, but the writing and the acting come together here to make the audience really care about these characters and their stories.
Horrifying, gut-wrenching, tragic, and a bit heroic, the film adaptation of "30 Days of Night" surpassed by expectation by miles. Even if you didn't like the comic, this movie is definitely worth seeing.
