People are way too hard on this film in my opinion. People bash and ridicule this and then wax all nostalgic about Under Siege, which is a vastly overrated movie. At least On Deadly Ground has some actual Aikido in it, which is, after all, what Seagal is famous for (and NOT his acting, except for his now-famous, self-referential, William-Shatneresque humor). And so what if he tried to make a "statement." It is something he cares deeply about. People ran from the theater with their ears bleeding when Seagal made some slanderous and inaccurate statements about the oil industry, but when Al Gore released On Inconvenient Ground, or whatever it was called, and made some scientifically inaccurate statements of his own, he won a freakin Nobel Peace Prize. I think that to be fair, either Seagal needs to win a Nobel Peace Prize for On Deadly Ground, or, Al Gore has to star as Seagal's sidekick in his next wrist-snapping adventure. Aren't I just full of good ideas? All sarcasm aside, On Deadly Ground works fine as an action yarn. Also, its soundtrack is shockingly good. In fact it is downright sumptuous and beautiful. Basil Poledouris has a knack for composing amazing scores for films that are far better than they deserve. His soundtrack for Conan the Barbarian, for instance, is one of the greatest scores ever composed. Many here are asking how Michael Caine can "forgive himself" for appearing in this movie. I can answer that one. Caine is a businessman, not an "arteeest." He doesn't watch his own movies. He doesn't care. In an interview once he was asked if he "regretted" Jaws: The Revenge. He said, "I've never seen it. Why should I regret it? That movie bought my mother a new house!" |
