A film that is so badly written, so badly directed and in places so badly performed (see Trilby Glover the defense attorney in the opening sequence) that at times I found myself scanning backwards for reality checks.
The Wha? Huh? Who? factor is so high in this film your likely to be stuck with a unibrow for a week after watching it. Everyone is suspicious. Everyone has a motive. Everyone (and I do mean everyone) is implicated in one way or another. People come out of left field with no character build up - they could have done it. People come from right field - they could have done it. People just standing around could have done it. Pacino meets a person for the first time and 30 seconds later, he could have done it. There are more suspicious people in this film than in the remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"
The film is choked full of little bizzarisms. A favorite of mine, the "I wanna drive the taxi cab" thing. What was that all about? What happened to the cab driver? He's there. He's not there. What was the cab driver thinking? Mysteries within mysteries within mysteries.
I have not seen a mess like this since "Dark Honeymoon". It's like 88 Minutes of deep brain Rolfing. Painful at every turn, yet somehow pleasurable. Pacino is definitely a heavyweight. Somehow he stands in the center of this swirling mass of debris and makes it watchable.
I can't explain it. It is on my guilty pleasures list.
(Kudos to whoever thought up the naked girl standing on one leg brushing her teeth. That's one I haven't seen before!)
