I had put off seeing Superbad for a while, namely because I'm usually leary of anything that has Judd Apatow's name attached to it. I just always found anything he's done personally all that good, and in fact, quite overrated. Apatow only serves as producer for Superbad, co-written by his Knocked Up star Seth Rogen. Superbad stars Jonah Hill (Grandma's Boy) and Michael Cera (Arrested Development, Juno) as life long buddies and high school seniors that plan to put their losing streaks with girls and life to an end in a big, booze-soaked bash. However, things go awry rather quickly, as both boys and their fake ID carrying friend (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) get involved in varying forms of chaos, most notably with two fun loving cops (Rogen and Bill Hader). While there are plenty of funny moments, Superbad ends up being surprisingly poignant to a point as well. Other than that, there really isn't anything we haven't seen before with Superbad, but the film as a whole is so enjoyable that you really won't care anyway. All in all, Superbad is surprisingly very funny, and even more surprisingly poignant; and in those respects alone, the film is a success. |
