30 Days of Night felt very refreshing in comparison to many horror movies I've seen lately. It also has a very creepy and terrifying feel to it, something I haven't felt in a horror film in years (Seriously, horror movies literally don't scare me anymore).
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: This film takes place in a small Alaskan town in which every year during the winter there is a 30 day period of only night. Then mysteriously, a nasty horde of vampires show up in town when this period begins and then start killing everyone in town or turning them into more bloodthirsty vampires. The movie is mostly centered around a group of survivors who try to survive the thirty days, because if the vampires hear and find somebody they get killed in gruesome ways. So this means sneaking past, trying to avoid making noise, and trying to stay alive.
STORYLINE- SCORE: 8 OUT OF 10: It doesn't exactly have the most impressive story ever, but it at least feels more original than many horror movies made these days.
GORE FACTOR- SCORE: 8.75 OUT OF 10: I've seen better blood and gore effects, but that doesn't mean this horror flick isn't gruesome. Gore ranges from chopping off heads with axes, vampires being ground up in giant drills, being fried by sunlight, stabbing, to blowing away vampires with shotguns, etc.
CREEPY FACTOR- SCORE: 9 OUT OF 10: This movie gave me an eerie chill that only comes from horror movies I find to be unique and different. The whole surviving for thirty days feels realistic, kind of the eerie realistic survival feel from 28 Days Later of would could really happen in that kind of situation.
VAMPIRE DESIGNS- SCORE: 8.25 OUT OF 10: Could have been better, but they do look different from many vampires. The faces have more ovalized eyes, pale-white skin, black eyes, sharp claws, thin sharp teeth, and oddly shaped faces.
PRESENTATION- SCORE: 8.5 OUT OF 10: The movie is well-made, but unfortunately, it's slow in the beginning which does hurt the score that I gave it. The creepy vibe is well-represented with nothing but darkness and vampires (that seem almost like freaky running zombies) everywhere. Plus, it has an authentic feel to it. Like you can't help but imagine that this would probably happen if vampires invaded some place. There are some nail-biting moments as well, in which you are afraid of what happens next because of some of the situations in the movie.
OVERALL: It could have been more, because it does come up short in certain areas, but it's a great movie nonetheless. It's an easy recommendation to any fans of horror movies. Plus, this would be one of hell of a game. I would look forward to playing a video game version of 30 Days of Night because it seems like a no-brainer for a game idea. But, I loved 30 Days of Night, and it's not something I'm going to forget any time soon. |
